Yahya Sinwar, leader of the Hamas terror organization and mastermind of the October 7th massacre, eliminated
IDF and Shin Bet spokespersons confirm that after a year-long manhunt, on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, IDF forces from the Southern Command eliminated Yahya Sinwar, leader of Hamas, during an operation in southern Gaza. Sinwar planned and executed the deadly attack on October 7, promoted his murderous ideology during and before the war, and is responsible for the deaths and abductions of many Israelis.
Sinwar was killed after a year of hiding among Gaza’s civilian population, in underground Hamas tunnels. Numerous IDF and Shin Bet operations over the past year, and particularly in the weeks leading up to his elimination, limited his ability to operate. He was relentlessly pursued by Israeli forces, leading to his demise.
In recent weeks, IDF and Shin Bet forces, led by the Southern Command, including Divisions 162 and Gaza Division, operated in southern Gaza based on intelligence provided by Shin Bet and Military Intelligence. The intelligence pointed to suspected areas where senior Hamas leaders were believed to be located. A force from the 828th Brigade identified and eliminated three terrorists. Following the identification process, it has now been confirmed that Sinwar was among the dead.
