People suspected to be members of rival cult groups locked themselves in a pitched battle in Awka area of Anambra State, using guns and other weapons against each other.
No fewer than six persons fell while the cross fire and reign of terror lasted.
The incident took place early hours of today along the popular Zik’s avenue and its environs.
The gunmen, it was gathered, were shooting sporadically for hours. There was pandemonium as panic – stricken residents of the area scampered for safety in different directions.
Unofficial sources gave divergent views on the clash and likely actors.
Some said the attackers were gunmen while others said it was clash involving persons resisting implementation of high rate of levies foisted on tricycle operators by the Anambra State Government.
The source said the cult groups were involved in battle for supremacy.
Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Ikenga Tochukwu, attributed the clash to rival cult groups.
He said the command had deployed armed policemen contain the ensuing tension in Awka, the state capital.
The Police spokesperson said patrol had been intensified within the area and the entire Awka to restore calm and order.
